How to make success in poker last

(Review of Economics and Statistics, 2011).

(Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, 2002).

(Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, 2006).

A win changes the decision you make next. What the research says about the hand after the big pot, what sport and business do to hold on to success, and how to build the structure that keeps yours.

What a win does to the next decision

Most players prepare for losing. Stop-loss, tilt control, what to do after a bad beat. Far fewer prepare for the session that goes well, and that is the one that quietly gives the money back.

Richard Thaler and Eric Johnson ran real-money experiments and found two effects. People who had just won took more risk than people who had not, which they named the house money effect. People who had just lost reached for any bet that offered a chance to get back to even (Management Science, 1990). At the table, the first one is the hand right after you scoop a big pot: the call looks cheaper, the spot looks more playable, the stack feels like it is not quite yours yet.

There is a physical layer under it. John Coates and Joe Herbert sampled 17 traders on a London trading floor across eight working days. A trader's morning testosterone predicted his profit that day, and cortisol rose with market volatility and with the swings in his own results (PNAS, 2008). One floor, seventeen men, a small study, and close enough to what players describe after a big score to be worth knowing.

This is not a character flaw. It is a predictable shift in how much risk looks acceptable, and it arrives exactly when you feel sharpest.

Sport: the income spike ends, the habits stay

Kyle Carlson, Joshua Kim, Annamaria Lusardi and Colin Camerer followed about 900 NFL players drafted between 1996 and 2003. Within twelve years of retiring, 15.7% had filed for bankruptcy, and career length and total earnings made little difference (American Economic Review, 2015). Playing longer and earning more did not protect anyone.

The same shows up outside sport. Scott Hankins, Mark Hoekstra and Paige Skiba matched Florida lottery winners to bankruptcy records. Winners of $50,000 to $150,000 were about 50% less likely than small winners to file in the first two years. Three to five years out they filed at the same rate, with much the same net assets and unsecured debt (Review of Economics and Statistics, 2011).

A big score does not install the habits that keep money. It buys time. When the time runs out, whatever was there before the score is still there. A poker heater works the same way: it pays for the next few months, and it changes nothing about the decisions that produced the losing stretch before it.

Business: growth that arrives before the thing that carries it

Startup Genome studied more than 3,200 high-growth internet startups and reported that 74% failed from premature scaling: hiring, spending and building ahead of what the business had actually proven. Of the companies that scaled prematurely, 93% never passed $100,000 in monthly revenue (Startup Genome Report Extra, 2011). It is an industry report rather than peer-reviewed research, and it is still the clearest description of the pattern.

The poker version is moving up in stakes on the strength of a good month. The results say the games are beatable; the bankroll, the study routine and the game selection have not moved with them. What fails is not the ambition, it is the gap between the level you are playing and the structure underneath it.

What makes success last: athletes and organizations

Research on keeping success is thinner than research on losing it, and where it exists it points at one place: what was built around the person, not how determined they were on the day.

Daniel Gould, Kristen Dieffenbach and Aaron Moffett interviewed ten US Olympic champions who had won 32 medals between them, along with their coaches and a parent or another close figure. The champions shared a set of characteristics: they handled anxiety, they were confident, mentally tough, intelligent about their sport, and able to block out distraction. The part that matters is where those came from. They were developed over years by the people and structures around the athlete, and maintained by them (Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, 2002).

Organizations get it from routine. Eight hospitals across eight cities introduced a nineteen-item surgical safety checklist. Death within 30 days fell from 1.5% to 0.8% and inpatient complications from 11% to 7%, measured on 3,733 patients before and 3,955 after (Haynes and colleagues, New England Journal of Medicine, 2009). Those teams did not become better surgeons inside a year. They added a routine that runs whether or not anyone is sharp that morning.

For one person, the move with the strongest evidence is deciding in advance. Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran reviewed 94 independent tests covering more than 8,000 people. A plan in the form "when X happens, I will do Y" produced a medium-to-large improvement in reaching the goal, d = .65, compared with holding the intention alone (Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, 2006).

So success holds when three things exist: an environment that keeps developing you, a routine that does not depend on your state that day, and a decision made before the moment. All three are built while things are calm.

Seven things to put in place so a good run holds

What this looks like in the app

Identity-First Poker Coach is the app I built for live players, and it is built around these three parts. You log a hand in a few taps between hands, so the record exists. You end the session when you leave and go over it with an AI coach that works from your own hands. After a few sessions the Insights screen shows what is costing you the most and where the losses come from, including how you play after a big pot.

The alerts are the if-then part. You set them before the session, while you are calm: after a big loss, after a big win, when your stack gets short, or a few hours in. The alert fires while you log a hand, with a reminder in your own words, and it sits in your Toolkit next to the leak you are working on.

An alert is a decision you already made, handed back to you at the moment you would not make it.

Want to see what happens to your game after a win?

Identity-First Poker Coach logs your hands in a few taps at the table and shows you what repeats. Logging, your history and a first ten-minute conversation with the coach are free. Your coach is an AI, not a person. For players 18 and over.
