Dopamine Addiction: What It Looks Like in Life and Poker, and How to Change It

May Mor

Before we start This is a view through the lens of identity-first coaching, grounded in research. It is not medical or psychological advice, and it does not diagnose or treat anything. If something has already crossed a line - money you're hiding or chasing, any substance, or thoughts of harming yourself in the hard moments - that's for a licensed professional, not a blog post.

Everyone talks about dopamine, and almost everyone has it wrong. Dopamine isn't the chemical of pleasure, it's the chemical of wanting - of the chase itself. Once you see that, a lot of things in life and at the table get a different explanation.

Dopamine isn't pleasure, it's wanting

Berridge and Robinson separated two things we thought were one: wanting and liking. They showed the dopamine system runs the wanting, not the liking. Schultz added that dopamine fires on the anticipation of a reward, before it arrives. In other words, dopamine doesn't reward you for what you got, it pushes you to chase what you haven't got yet - and that is exactly what makes it so easy to exploit.

What it looks like in life

In life it looks innocent. The phone you check for no reason, the feed that scrolls itself, the sugar, the shopping, the notifications, the work sprint that stands in for rest. They all share the same loop:

Trigger Fast hit Short lift Dip below the line Again, sooner

Ferster and Skinner showed back in 1957 why the loop is so sticky: an unpredictable reward, arriving on a variable schedule, is the hardest kind to extinguish. The feed, the slot machine, and the poker table are all built exactly that way.

What it looks like in poker

In poker it looks like action. You play too many hands because sitting out is boring. You can't fold, because the fold doesn't pay the hit. You don't leave the table, winning or losing, because the next jolt is always one hand away. You chase a draw, because a near-miss lights up the same win circuitry (Clark showed this) and increases the urge to keep going. Over time the same stakes stop doing it, so you move up - not because the game grew, but because the buzz shrank.

Why it matters: the balance that breaks

This system runs on a balance. Every spike of pleasure drags a small dip below the line - the crash, the restlessness, the need for more. Anna Lembke describes it well: with repetition the spikes get smaller and the dips get deeper (that's tolerance), until the behavior no longer produces pleasure - it only covers the deficit it created. At that point ordinary life goes flat, because you've recalibrated what counts as "enough" - and that's the engine under tilt, under spew, and under a lot of avoidance in life. Not a lack of discipline, but a system chasing a hit just to feel normal.

baseline big spike small dip smaller spike deeper dip barely a spike long deficit
With each repeat of the same fast reward, the dopamine spike shrinks and the dip after it deepens - until the behavior only covers the deficit it created, leaving craving and flatness. That's tolerance.
The behavior no longer produces pleasure - it only covers the deficit it created.

The fix: a stimulation budget, not abstinence

The most common mistake is trying to become a calm, low-stimulation person. That fails within a week, because it fights who you are. If you're a thrill-seeker, boredom feels physically bad, and "just stop" won't hold. The approach that works is the opposite: a stimulation budget. Intensity on purpose, through channels with a slow payoff and a real cost of effort, with scheduled recovery beside it. Not giving up the intensity, but moving it to a channel that doesn't hollow you out.

Techniques - in life and poker

You need two channels, and both belong on the weekly calendar:

Thrill channel

  • Hard physical training: sprints, lifting, martial arts, climbing
  • Cold exposure: a cold shower or a cold swim
  • Competition with a stake you can afford to lose
  • Performing in front of people: speaking, music, improv
  • Skilled, geared risk: surf, ski, dive
  • A real creative deadline in front of real people

Recovery channel

  • A daily quiet block, 30-60 minutes with no input
  • Nature without headphones
  • One screen-free evening a week
  • Sleep protected like a meeting: fixed window, dark room
  • Slow body work: sauna, long walks, stretching
  • One deep conversation instead of ten shallow ones
The selection rule A good substitute is effortful before it pays off, builds skill, and has a natural stopping point. The old behavior was effortless, skill-free, and endless. That difference - payoff after effort, not before it - is what lets intensity exist without re-tightening the loop.

And for the long run you don't fight the moment, you make the decisions in advance while you're cold, so the behavior is harder to start when you're triggered:

  1. Absolute rules, not moderation. "I don't put the app on my phone," "I don't play on weeknights" - one decision instead of fifty arguments a day.
  2. Physical distance. App deleted, not hidden. No balance on the phone. Tempting food out of the house.
  3. Blockers with a lock. Site blockers you can't easily undo, betting-site self-exclusion registers, a card with a hard cap.
  4. One person who knows. Secrecy is fuel for the loop. One person who knows the plan and gets a regular update.

Managing dopamine during a tournament

In a tournament you can't just get up and leave when you start chasing - in cash a stop-loss and a time limit do a lot of the work, but in a tournament you're in until you bust or cash. So the dopamine urge shows up as spewing your stack, firing another bullet, or manufacturing action when you're card-dead. A few mechanical moves keep you rational:

  1. Cap your bullets before you register. Decide how many bullets you're willing to fire while you're cold. The deficit right after busting is exactly when you'll want "one more bullet" - and that's the worst moment to decide.
  2. Use the scheduled breaks to reset. Every break, get up, drink water, walk, breathe - especially after a big pot or a bad beat. That's the spike or the crash, when it's easiest to gamble your stack away the next level.
  3. Card-dead is the danger zone: don't manufacture action. Long folding stretches make the urge to open marginal hands feel like relief - that's dopamine-seeking, and it's what busts you before the money. Move the boredom into reading opponents and stack math, not into splashing chips.
  4. Ten seconds before a big decision. In a tournament one decision can end your day, so the pause matters even more. When the pot is big or you feel the urge to gamble, stop and breathe before you act. The urge is dopamine; the pause lets analysis decide.
  5. Name the state, quietly, to yourself. "I'm chasing," "I'm on tilt after that beat," "I'm bored and want action." Naming the feeling loosens its grip and buys you a second of control.
  6. Protect your tournament life on a rule, not a feeling. Decide in advance: "I don't gamble my stack out of boredom," "after a bad beat I fold the next orbit tight." A rule set while you're cold holds when the chemistry doesn't.

Name the triggers before the impulse

The impulse doesn't come from nowhere. It fires on fixed, repeating cues, and everyone's are different. The big advantage of writing yours down in advance: a trigger is predictable, so you can attach a pause and a ready-made rule to each one, and the decision gets made while you're cold, not mid-hand. Here are mine:

The triggerWhat I read into itWhat it actually is, and the move
A big pot"I have to close this now."A big pot is exactly the moment to stop and analyze, not to shove. The dopamine spike is strongest when the pot is big - and that's when it's easiest to gamble your stack away.
I'm in position"I'm in control, I can attack."Position is an information edge, not a license to be aggressive. Use it to gather information and pick your spot, not to apply pressure on autopilot.
A passive opponent (check, small bet, weak squeeze)"Weakness - attack."Passive isn't necessarily weak. Often it's a trap or a strong hand slowing down. The urge to attack passivity is the signal to stop for ten seconds, not to speed up.

Examples from my own table

Here are those triggers in action, in a few of my own recent hands:

Example 01 · TT on an ace-high board

The hand: TT on the button on A72J Q. After my opponent checked the turn, I read weakness, bet, and shoved the river.

The triggers: a growing pot, and an opponent who checked (passivity I translated into weakness).

What the impulse did: TT turned from a bluff-catcher into a bluff. The check lit the urge to attack, and the shove closed the hand with aggression instead of facing a hard check - and no worse hand calls me.

How to prepare better: A rule set in advance - one pair below top pair on an ace board is a bluff-catcher: check-call one street at most, never bet-bet-shove. And before any all-in, one question: what worse hand calls me? None - I don't shove.

Example 02 · 22 vs a weak squeeze

The hand: 22 on the button facing an early-position open and two calls. A player made a small, weak squeeze, and instead of folding I shoved my whole 100bb stack.

The trigger: a small, weak squeeze - passivity I translated into weakness, a perfect invitation for the "attack weakness" pattern.

What the impulse did: 22 is set-or-nothing, but I read weakness and reacted on impulse instead of analysis. I got two calls and busted.

How to prepare better: Small pairs are set-mine-or-fold - not a bluff, and definitely not a shove over aggression. Facing an early open and two calls without clear implied odds, the default is fold. A weak squeeze is information to note, not a green light.

Example 03 · Short stack: shoving instead of folding

The hands: 10bb. Once I shoved KJ offsuit from UTG, and another time I called off an all-in in the big blind with 55. In both, a fold was available, and I chose to gamble.

The trigger: a short stack and impatience. When you're short, the urge to end the hand and get action is strongest, and folding feels like a slow death.

What the impulse did: I picked the thrill of a shove over the quiet, boring fold, even when the hand wasn't really in range.

How to prepare better: Push and call ranges for 10bb by position, written down in advance. From UTG the range is narrow, and KJ offsuit is usually outside it. If the hand isn't in range, you fold without debate.

In every one of these hands I knew in real time what was right - the trigger just got there before the rule. Once the triggers are written down in advance, each one fires a pause and a ready rule instead of an impulse.

Training the hard fold

The fold is the hardest move for dopamine: it gives no action, doesn't close the hand, and doesn't feel like "I did something." That's exactly why it needs its own training. A few things I decided to try on myself:

  1. One card first. Look at only your first card. If it isn't strong enough to continue, fold without looking at the second. That way your brain never builds a story ("I have a K, and a J, let's go") to justify the gamble.
  2. The "bleed" is an active choice. Let yourself give up a hand and lose a little - fold, or limp-fold when you're short - instead of shoving. As I wrote in the exploitative-poker piece, for you the calculated passive line is the exploitative play. A small, controlled loss beats burning your stack on a gamble.
  3. A rule set in advance, not a live decision. Short-stack push and call ranges, by position, decided on a card before the session. If the hand isn't in range, there's nothing to think about.
  4. Name the excuse. "I'm short, I have to do something" is exactly the dopamine talking. The moment you hear it, that's the signal to fold, not to shove.

To actually practice this, I went to low-buy-in tables and trained myself to fold every hand that made me uncomfortable, even when the fold was technically wrong. For a negligible cost I bought real training: sitting with the discomfort of the fold until it stops being a trigger to shove.

Underneath all these techniques there's a deeper layer: study more. A lot of my shoves come from uncertainty - when I'm not sure what else to do, gambling is easy. The more theory I learn - ranges, alternative lines, spots - the more moves I have beyond shove-or-fold, the fold feels like an informed choice instead of surrender, and my confidence comes from what I know, not what I feel. That's exactly why I'm working to move more of my learning into theory and review, not only experience at the table.

By who you are: there's no single technique

Same biology, but each type gets caught in a different place and needs something different. Here's how I match it:

The typeThe main triggerThe move that fits
Thrill-seeker / risk-takerBoredom feels unbearable, and that's what lights the search.A high dose of the thrill channel, scheduled earlier in the day, before the urge arrives. Absolute rules, not moderation. Competition on a fixed budget.
Highly sensitiveOverwhelm - noise, conflict, load - is what sends you searching for relief.Guard the recovery channel fiercely. Beware the trap of reaching for intensity when you're fried: it feels like relief and deepens the crash.
Planner / analyticalUnderstands the mechanism and stops there, without applying it.Less analysis, more execution: run a real reset and measure it. Blockers and systems you design yourself hold best.
Regulation-firstTries to regulate dopamine on an already-flooded nervous system.Stabilize the base first - sleep, stress, routine - then the rest of the tools take hold. Without it, every technique slips.

How I use this in coaching

At the base of my coaching is the question of who you are, not which technique is "correct." In sessions I first find your trigger, under- or over-stimulation, and your type, then we build a stimulation budget that fits your wiring. "Just stop" fails for everyone. The right substitute and the right binding, for the right type, hold.

A personal note

I know this one from the inside, and it's the same leak I wrote about in the piece on risk-takers. I'm an action player, a thrill-seeker, and boredom is my strongest trigger. What works for me isn't trying to be calm - it's moving the intensity to surfing, training, and competition, and locking in how long I'll play before the first hand is even dealt.
